Re: Oh those IDEs......

Brad,

Yikes! That is terrible. Let me see; I run the standard JDK 1.3.1 as the DP releases caused Eclipse not to launch. I changed the Info.plist file for Eclipse to allocate additional RAM (up to 192MB).

Apart from that, everything else is standard. I use M3 for my work project, which involves ~1,300 classes and assorted JSPs and other files, without any trouble. I wish I could offer more advice to help, as I really like Eclipse and have found that it boosts my productivity, especially when refactoring code.

Launch time is about ~1 minute for that project.

Best Regards,
Ray

Nonetheless, on Beige G3 with 256mb RAM, M3 takes minutes to launch, then crashes so readily I finally gave up. Can you let me in on the secret?

I use Eclipse M3 on Jaguar at least eight hours a day and have never had any trouble with stability, and the response times are fine on a 600 MHz iBook with 384MB RAM.

Anyone having a feeling in what direction to go when choosing java IDE for the Mac???

I've been experimenting with moving from vim/linux to some undecided ide/osx. Used to use Linux VisualAge for Java until IBM reneged on support.

I gave eclipse a good shot but finally gave up. It crashes on the least provocation, and generally felt unwieldy and slow.

Since upgrading to 10.2, I've started experimenting with Apple's developer tools. Reasonably impressed so far. Only real complaint is that its really hard to install it on a 2gb root partition. Main fear is the fear that I'm giving up cross-platform compatibility. Haven't used it enough to be sure.
