Mail.app seems to me to be more of a poster child for what you can program quickly with Mac OS X using OS X's "built-in" SpellCheck and Address Book than something meant to be a top-o'-the-line mail application. It would seem the showcasing was first priority in the application's development, rather than user experience. "Showcase two APIs, of sorts, and add a few socket connectors so that the app's useful as well."

Compare Mail.app to Outlook Express or the venerable Em@iler for Classic, both of which gave me a more pleasing email experince. Ymmv, tcjotm.
