Did you include a line like the following somewhere in you code before attempting to use SSL?

System.getProperties().put("java.protocol.handler.pkgs", "com.sun.net.ssl.internal.www.protocol");

I find that even with JSSE present on a machine, it isn't actually used unless its presence has been advertised in this manner. (This is documented somewhere, though I can't remember where.)
