That's the classic problem on OSX (BTW it used to work with grayscale JPGs).

Just a week ago somebody posted a fix to JAI's JPEG encoder on this list. You can search the archives. Mail me if you can't find it. I have the mail around somewhere but I haven't tried to use the patch yet.
