ScreenMenuBar Dead (!!!) Slow

Dear list members,

I am using Jaguar on a machine with 256 MB RAM.
I have made my jar into a MAC OS X application using MRJAppBuilder. I have
set the option "useScreenMenuBar" to true. Now I get a behaviour of the menu
bar that is slower than slow (I find the GUI slow enough as it is) - when I
click on a menu item, the menu will open but you can watch the items
appearing one by one, and if you change to another menu, the one that is to
disappear does so by fading very, very, very, very slowly. I get the same
behaviour when I don't use MRJAppBuilder, but simply start the jar from the
terminal.
If I just start the app without a screen menu bar, it is slow, but just
about tolerably so. When I did the same procedure under MAC OS 10.1., I
didn't get this problem. Is it something related to JAGUAR? Is there
something I can do about it (my users kind of strongly insist on having a
screen menu bar...)?

Can anybody pleeeease help? I was going to release today - I didn't expect
my app to become slower just because I'm using a screen menu bar...

Thanks for your help,

Thomas
