Re: How much are we to report about bugs in Java 1.4.1 pre-release?

Please take this discussion off of java-dev and onto the Apple-sanctitoned list to discuss the Developer Preview.

Thanks,
Allen

In defense of Mickey Segal's frustration, there are so many serious issues with my large AWT app (which behaves fine under other VM's) I simply don't know where to start. I don't have time to diagnose and dissect so many issues, so my plan is to wait for the next VM version that presents me with less chaos. That is, I'll assume that Apple already knows about many of these issues. Bad assumption maybe, but it seems the most pragmatic assumption to make unless I'm told by Apple that they think it's in pretty good shape. Or, should I submit a single vague and multifarious bug report, listing many poorly-diagnosed issues perhaps with screenshots?

Of course, it's in Apple's best interest to say always "yes, please send in a well-diagnosed bug report". But I have to prioritize efforts, and without knowing more subtle information from Apple (e.g., "On this version, we expect AWT to have major glitches, so don't spend a lot of time filing bugs on that yet"), which we are understandably unlikely to get, prioritizing is hard to do.

Reluctance to submit bug reports now does *not* imply we don't believe in filing bug reports. It means we're saving our limited energy for when it will be most useful.
