if there is a # at the beginning of the line as shown below, it's a comment, and not used.
Be sure to take out the #... this is documented in the top of the sample file.

To test this in such a way that you remove your Java client from the equation, you could install the psql command-line client on the client machine and make sure that's working before you try the Java client. If you can't get this working quickly ( by removing the comment markers ), my advice is to take this approach, and seek help on the Postgres administration list, where folks are more expert on setting up these servers. From what I can tell, you're doing everything else right. Were you able to have your Java client connect to the server while running locally on the ( iMac ) server machine?
