So, as you can see I'm perfectly happy using my Mac in this focused way, with a singular goal of producing new software for the world to enjoy, rich clients that are even more exciting than the OS they happen to run on. For me its perfect if its built on a Mac and deployed via Java and the Internet enabling the largest possible audience to be reached, for the sake of the users not just the OS.

Here is where I see a disconnect between what you are asking for, and what you say your goal is. If you want to reach the largest possible audience, then you probably do not want to target Java 1.5, especially before it is even released. There are likely to be little surprises, and some few may be deal breakers. I know that many of my clients do not install new java revisions until after they have been out a while, and after some conflicts in the windows registry, they are not fond of having multiple versions on their computer.

I have one client that is still working out the details of their 1.4 migration. Not 1.5 - 1.4.

There are those, though, that are eagerly awaiting a release version of 1.5, and they plan to move to it quickly. They are doing test projects even now, so having no 1.5 VM was a really bad thing. For this group, the beta is great. If Apple keeps releasing versions of 1.5, even if they require a reboot, I can develop for these clients while they work on their 1.5 test projects and plans. Once it ships, we will have to see whether Apple ships fast enough to keep them happy, but that depends a lot on Sun's schedule, the client's schedule, and how good Tiger is at that time.

Now, if I could just download the latest Java release and install it like any other app without having to rearrange my whole environment with a complete Tiger install I'd truly be on my merry way. The idea of Apple charging for Java when its available everywhere else for no cost and to make it hostage to the next generation OS does not agree with me or Java.

Yeah, but Sun has proven incapable of delivering a top quality release of Java for the MacOS. They tried. They failed.

Similarly, Microsoft proved unwilling to release one that Sun was willing to accept.

Thus far, outside of Sun, not many people ship releases of Java. IBM does. So does Apple. I really cannot complain too much about their revenue model given that they could just as easily have decided to let Sun do it.

This is a long winded way of saying that Apple's Java VM is quite usable for me, and I find the tradeoff of only working on the current OS acceptable, in return for having them provide a decent implementation.

The big worry I had was not being able to use my Mac to do development in Java for my clients. As I said above, even though it will require a reboot, I can at least stay in the game.
