Actually it did occur to me that these might be used on OS X to determine the disposition of the signals from the application. If they turn up or not anyhow. 
If the curiosity were there. For me, OS X is fortunately (unfortunately didn't seem apt), not the platform I'm having trouble with. The original poster might have the curiosity to do some checking about the signal processing using your code.
