Tracking VK_TAB in JTextField

I'm trying to figure out how to intercept tabs in JTextField. I want them to operate as usual (to perform focus changes), but I need to know when a tab is pressed. Just tracking focus isn't sufficient (there are lots of reasons focus changes).

Some research has dug up Sun employees claiming that overriding processKeyEvent or processEvent will yield the tab event. But on the Mac this is not the case: it appears that Apple is stripping out tab and shift-tab at a much higher level. I imagine I can turn off tab as a focus-change key and then tabs will become available, but I want to keep it acting in that respect. Suggestions?
