Hi,

Java 1.5 will be a separate download.

Is there a way to achieve the default style border on a JPanel on OSX Panther using Netbeans? (disclaimer: the following SWT reference is not intended to start an SWT vs Swing thread...it is intended as an example to clarify the question) I notice in Eclipse/SWT, using a "Group" correctly draws the border to match an aqua "box" made in Interface Builder. In NetBeans, the default border of a JPanel does not match the aqua "box".

Just wondering if any NetBeans users have run into this and, if so, how it may be accomplished?

Installing Java 1.5 does not make it the default VM. Nothing you set
in Java Preferences will change that either. Setting the VM order in
Java Preferences sets the search order used by the launcher framework
if you have an application that uses '1.3+' or '1.4+' for its
JVMVersion. For Web Start the first VM satisfying the VM version
request in the JNLP file is used.

As for jinfo: oops.

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: sun/jvm/
hotspot/tools/JInfo

Dmitry gets the prize for the first 1.5 reported on java-dev. :-) You
know the drill.

Not sure if this is a good idea or not, but it seems to work. To get 1.5 to
be the default command line java I changed

/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/CurrentJDK to point to
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.5.0 instead of
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.2 as it did by
default.

So my directory listing is now

drwxr-xr-x   11 root  wheel  374 Apr 29 14:28 .
drwxr-xr-x   10 root  wheel  340 Apr 25 21:45 ..
lrwxr-xr-x    1 root  wheel    5 Apr 25 21:45 1.3 -> 1.3.1
drwxr-xr-x    8 root  wheel  272 Apr 25 21:45 1.3.1
lrwxr-xr-x    1 root  wheel    5 Apr 25 21:45 1.4 -> 1.4.2
drwxr-xr-x    9 root  wheel  306 Apr 29 14:28 1.4.2
lrwxr-xr-x    1 root  wheel    5 Apr 29 13:58 1.5 -> 1.5.0
drwxr-xr-x    8 root  wheel  272 Apr 29 13:59 1.5.0
drwxr-xr-x    6 root  wheel  204 Apr 25 22:02 A
lrwxr-xr-x    1 root  wheel    1 Apr 25 21:45 Current -> A
lrwxr-xr-x    1 root  wheel    5 Apr 29 14:28 CurrentJDK -> 1.5.0

Seems to have worked, but no idea if it'll break on the next software
update.

From home directory I now get:

~$ java -version java version "1.5.0_02" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_02-56) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_02-36, mixed mode, sharing)

The programs I wrote using java 1.4.2 with the generics patch seem to run
fine as well.

I offer no guarantees or warranties on this approach. It's just a case of
changing a single symbolic link, but I didn't get the information from
Apple. It was just through doing a "which java" seeing it was in /usr/bin/
which itself was a link to the System/Library/... path and going from there.
If Apple produce an official method it's simple enough to resort back by
changing the link to point back to 1.4.2 again then doing Apple's method but
follow any of my advice at your own risk :-)

Hi *,

I just got the Java 5 Release 1 for Mac OS X 10.4 and installed it. I
tried to set the Java 5 VM as the default VM using the tool from /
Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0. I selected J2SE 5.0. But when I
go to the Terminal and type "java -version" I still get "1.4.2_07".

Looking into /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions
shows that the link "CurrentJDK" still points to "1.4.2". Do I have
to change this link, too? And what about the strange directory "A"?
The link "Current" points to the directory "A". Do I have to change
this link, too?

Kind regards,
Lars
