Even handled well or at least something like correctly this is one of those things that programmers can spend too much time being concerned with though isn't it. BBEdit when you enter a } will briefly flash the corresponding {. Without syntax color highlighting this gives you some idea of what pairs with what. If however the corresponding { is not in the current scrolling view the flash is useless. The other day I ended up guessing I think 3 or 4 times where to put a debug 'else' corresponding to a prior 'if'. Even after I had gone through and changed the indents to what I usually use, which is in fact what I use because it should help tell me in the way I'm used to what pairs with what., it was still difficult to tell out of a sequence of } } } } which should get the...else { System.out.println("debug message didn't hit clip"); } So maybe <labled> tags are inherently superior even without terrible blank or newline handling? Or maybe that next language or notation will finally figure out the perfect way to handle all of these little text layout text organization nuisance matters? |
