I find this thoroughly difficult to understand. What, 1.3.1 (especially) and 1.4.2 are still being maintained even though 1.5 is out? I thought that 1.3.1 was not going to have any fixes?

Looks like Apple just wants to catch up to the "final" 1.3.1 release from Sun - it specifically says that they only include fixes from Sun and haven't done and "Apple" changes. In that sense Apple is not maintaining 1.3.1 in terms of OS X specific issues, they are simply passing on Sun's maintenance fixes.
