Java 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 Release 2 (formerly Java 1.4.2 Release 2)
contains improvements and bug fixes for the Java 1.4.2
implementation in Mac OS X 10.4, including updates to J2SE v.
1.4.2_08 and 1.3.1_16. No Apple changes have been made to the
1.3.1 implementation beyond the update to 1.3.1_16. This is
Developer Preview 2 of Java 1.3.1 and Java 1.4.2 Release 2 for
Mac OS X Tiger. PLEASE NOTE: this preview will overwrite existing
Java 1.3/1.4 installations and is not removable.Please see the
"Reporting bugs" section for details on how to give feedback.
I find this thoroughly difficult to understand. What, 1.3.1
(especially) and 1.4.2 are still being maintained even though 1.5
is out? I thought that 1.3.1 was not going to have any fixes?

Looks like Apple just wants to catch up to the "final" 1.3.1
release from Sun - it specifically says that they only include
fixes from Sun and haven't done and "Apple" changes. In that sense
Apple is not maintaining 1.3.1 in terms of OS X specific issues,
they are simply passing on Sun's maintenance fixes.
IIRC, there were some nasty security problems lurking in some of the
prior releases, such as several different DoS crasher bugs where the
proper paint or the proper zip file could slaughter the VM, and thus
Firefox. I suspect that this motivated the updates.
