User install of Tomcat?

I'm written a little webapp I want to deploy via Tomcat. Ideally I want to be able to point users to somewhere where they can download a .dmg file that will install Tomcat and a startup item to launch it automatically. I can then give them a .war file and tell them where to stick it (in a polite way :-) and that should be all there is to it.

This works fine under Windows, but I'm somewhat surprised that there doesn't seem to be any such a Mac OS X friendly Tomcat available, certainly not that I've found. Obviously I could write my own package and startup item without too much trouble, but I don't want to duplicate other work (or conflict with another installation if any of my users already have Tomcat).

It doesn't need to be a particular up to date version of Tomcat, 5.0.28 or even Tomcat 4.1 would be sufficient, as long as it runs on both Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4. Do I need to write my own installer, surely that would just be reinventing the wheel??

An installer for version 4.1.24 of Tomcat is included on the 10.3 XCode tools CD but that doesn't come with a startup item so isn't useful for my needs. It also installs JBoss which I don't need, and is very obviously aimed at developers rather than end users.

If I do write my own installer, where would be the preferred place to install Tomcat for end users? /Library/Tomcat, /usr/local/jakarta-tomcat-5.0.?? or somewhere else?
