this is awesome, thank you. There is sample code for starting up the jvm in a (cocoa) thread. I did not use it because I didnt understand it, and I was hoping that it would only be necessary for gui event handling (ie, I thought it was something to do with events). So, the answer seems to be that there is a reason why the sample code does it the way it does - doh. Maybe I should have picked an easier problem :-) I have been a java programmer for some time, but this is my first foray into jndi etc. But I am keen to get my spiffy java screensavers going on my new Mac, so that I can do some more work on them.
