Okay, worst case results -- my 400 MHz G3 iMac "Special Edition" running Panther:

java FileIO
.

FileOutputStream write 8M (avg) 254
FileOutputStream write 8M (mean) 240

FileInputStream read 8M (avg) 184 FileInputStream read 8M(mean) 184 .

FileOutputStream fill and write 8K avg 856
FileOutputStream fill and write 8K mean 643

FileInputStream read and check 8K avg 696 FileInputStream read and check 8K mean 652

Time: 102.478

OK (2 tests)

java version "1.4.2_05"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-141.3)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-38, mixed mode)

Beat that!
