I had seen some information about MIDP/MIDP2.0 programming being covered at WWDC. Surprisingly I didn't see any mention of new J2ME products launching from Apple at this time so I'm unsure what they were really pushing as the development effort.

That's VERY interesting that Apple's devoting WWDC time to MIDP and J2ME. Maybe they're not talking about anything at the moment, but it sure makes you go "hmmm...."

Or am I reading too much into this?

The CEO of mpowerplayer was up on stage showing his wares. He also noted that the new NetBeans Mobility pack has/will soon have a recently created Mac installer. (NB - while session content is under NDA, I do not believe that it falls outside the bounds to note two currently shipping products, and that no additional public products were announced.)

Dunno about reading too much into it. I suspect that Apple is not planning on getting into the portable or cell phone market anytime soon, and MIDP seems too focussed on handset buttons to really work for an iPod. That said, being able to develop for this fast-growing market is clearly important to somebody at the mothership, or it would not have gotten time at both the tools overview and a dedicated session.
