No problem... I had this workaround from another related incident (I'm normally not that fast).

There were a few add's without getContentPane. One of those mistakes that will build without any warnings but throw exceptions at runtime (still trying to figure out why they did that...)

I thought in Java 5 that an 'add' to a JFrame is automatically directed to the content pane. Am I wrong?

No, you are right, but you shouldnt be relying on that for your Mac targeting code for quite some time. Since Tiger didnt ship with Java 5 as the default JRE it will be a while before it is worth the support pain to assume that things like that work.

I only point it out because Stephen specifically mentioned he was using Java 5. If your application requires Java 5 for other reasons that would eliminate any reason to "hold back" and avoid calling add () on a JFrame.

P.S. Has Apple got Java Web Start working to auto-install Java 5 if it is specified in the JNLP file? Like Sun's implementation will do for Windows and Linux? That would help tremendously in cases like this, and given the information in a Java Application Bundle, I would think that the same auto-install process could be activated for a "standard" Java application on the Mac. This would significantly reduce the "support pain".
