In France, salaries are paid for 13 months every calendar year. I don't know why, or what the extra month is called.

This is not related to a temporal (month) thing at all. This is only an 'extra cash' for each year (12 months).

And, 'salaries don't get paid for 13 months every calendar year', only some happy few are (just like golden parachutes are for only some people).
