Synth with Apple-style menu bar?

I am invoking my Swing client application with the parameter 'apple.laf.useScreenMenuBar=true' to get the Apple-style menu bar, where the menu is always at the top rather than hanging off of each individual JFrame. As part of our development we have just started using the Synth skinnable look-and-feel introduced in Java 1.5. Under Synth the menu bar no longer appears at the top and is back to being on the frames. I assume that the menu bar support is part of the apple.laf packages and that by using Synth we are dealing with an entirely separate codebase. Is there any way to make both of these things work or is it one or the other? Thanks.
