JavaEmbedding API - anyone had any success using it?

I created a test applet with an AWT button, and an AWT textfield. When you click the button, it should set the textfield text to "FOO".

I've got my test applet to draw to the window and that's when the screwiness starts. If I click on the button, the button doesn't actually register a press, but the textfield becomes active, and you can enter text into it.

Has anyone worked with this API at all? Anyone care to speculate as to what might be going on behind the scenes?
