I installed Tiger and then installed Java 1.5 and used the Java Preferences utility to set Java 1.5 as the default for applets in Safari. However, since Tiger would not shut down properly I did a clean install of Tiger (without erasing the hard drive). Afterwards, Safari was back to using 1.4 again and the Java Preferences utility would not launch. After I downloaded Java 1.5 again and installed it again the Java Preferences utility worked.
