If you need to have an IDE, it has to be Eclipse for me, I use it
Windows and Mac (10.4) seamless integration with CVS. It's been a
long time since I looked at CW, but Eclipse is certainly better
than XCode for Java development (IMHO). I don't think it's ever
crashed on me either.
I find IDEA also very much worth a look. I used Eclipse for well
over a year before making the jump, and found Eclipse quite capable,
but IDEA matched my workflow better. I found it, for example,
somewhat snappier, and somewhat more straightforward. Several of my
co-workers disagree, and continue to use Eclipse, so I suspect it
really is just personal aesthetics, not fundamental differences.
Both IDEs offer a number of very useful plugins. For me, various
refactoring, inspection, and metric tools are just too keen.
You will find that both of these use the 'one enormous window' model
of development, which ticks me off. I like the 'windows everywhere'
model which you can still get to in XCode and CW.
My only real complaint with Eclipse is the opaque project files. We
create projects for our developers as part of the nightly build
system, so project dependencies stay up to date. Eclipse uses opaque
binary files for both the project and the workspace, so I have not
really been able to create these. I can create .classpath files, but
getting a workspace around them is just not happening.
As I understand it, an Ecilpse maven could do write such a beast
fairly simply, but my pugin ability is not up to the task.
Anyhow, IDEA is worth a look. It is not cheap, but they usually have
a personal license for $250 or so about once a year. That is when I
got my license.

3) Do the other CW users recommend an IDE that would be a
relatively painless transition from CW? I tried Xcode and that was
anything but painless and went right back to CW. Ideally a
replacement IDE would work on both Windows and Mac OS X and have
hooks into CVS. Ideally, I wouldn't go broke doing this. A free or
cheap product would be great but I'm willing to spend the money to
get something that works and isn't too big of a culture shock from
CodeWarrior.
