If you don't mind using a JNI library, you may want to do a call to the
Carbon API "FSIsAliasFile".

I have implemented such a call in class
ch.randelshofer.quaqua.filechooser.Files, which is part of the Quaqua Look
and Feel.

The Java class and the JNI code (in C) are open source (LGPL or Modified BSD
license).
