i think this is deliberate (if misguided). i can't remember where i
read
it, but the rationale was something along the lines of "the user
can swap
mouse at any time, so the number of mouse buttons isn't constant".
I agree with the 'misguided' judgement. It is less than useful to not
treat the 95+% common case properly, just because the result may be
imprecise in some cases.
If I replace my mouse while using an application that adapts to the
hardware, I would accept if I had to restart the application to get
optimal behaviour. Equally, if I have more than one mouse installed,
I could live with getting the minimum number of buttons available on
any connected pointing device.
Still, the largest number of desktop systems have only one mouse
connected, and the usefulness of this method is needlessly sacrificed.
