Just a note to say that I managed to write my headless graphics servlet and reference it with parameters from the html pages generated by the main servlet for my web app. Thanks again to those who helped me through my misconceptions.

The app is at <http://doolittle.ibls.gla.ac.uk/motif> and the graphics the servlet produces can be seen in the 'Dihedral Angles' link. A bit slow at present, but it's currently on an old Sun box (although prototyped on my Mac PB) and I'm waiting to buy a new server next year - and it won't be from Sun :-) .
