Newer versions (starting with 1.5.0_07 and 1.4.2_12 in particular, at least in Sun's implementation) contain the -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError switch that is invaluable for tracking down memory leaks in Java systems deployed on Mac OS X.

As Greg Guerin pointed out, we have developer previews available that you can download from <http://connect.apple.com>. The good news is that they contain 1.5.0_07 so you can start using -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError :-). The bad news is that the VM will crash when it tries to dump the heap on an OOM condition :-(. We have since fixed this issue in our code and the option will be usable in future developer previews.
