Actually, NB 5.5 works really well for me with JDK 6.0 on my Core 2 Duo MacBook (faster and much smaller RAM usage, but some minor issues with screen repaint). If you use a PPC Mac, it might be slow due to lack of JIT.

Use Java Preferences to configure the default JDK, and change netbeans_jdkhome in netbeans.conf to make NB run a different JDK.
