Re: Installing Java 1.4

If I run the installer with the 5.0 JVM, I get the following error message:

"A suitable JVM could not be found. Please run the program again using the option -is:javahome <JAVA HOME DIR>"

I've tried setting the extra parameters, but no matter what I set them to, no difference is seen.

I don't really want to archive and install the OS. That sounds a bit dangerous - it maybe isn't, but it certainly sounds it ;)

whenever I try to run the Java 1.4.2 Update 2 package that I downloaded from Apple, it says that it cannot install the package because the volume does not contain a version of Java that needs updating.

Are you suggesting I remove the java.pkg file from /Library/Receipts folder and then try to reinstall 1.4?

Can you post an error message or something?

The brief page I read tells me the installer is a shell-script (a .command
file), so maybe there's something in that which can be edited to accept
J2SE 5 R4.

What do you mean Archive and Install?

I meant the OS Archive and Install from CD/DVD.

 I've tried running the Java
1.3 and 1.4 installer package and it says 1.4 is already installed?
Is there a way of getting rid of it first?

You have to remove the receipt in /Library/Receipts. It will be a bundle
or package with the Installer icon.

However, simply removing the receipt and overwriting the current install
isn't guaranteed to work. You're trading some safety for expedience:
