Don't Panic. Begin by reading ZTerm's fine home page:
  <http://homepage.mac.com/dalverson/zterm/>

About halfway down the page is this heading:
Why can't ZTerm talk to my device?

There, the developer explains how to use the 'ioreg' command in
Terminal.app to confirm whether the USB/serial driver is present. As
given, the command generates a lot of output for you to wade through, so
you might want to send it to a text file and then search it in TextEdit for
the word "Serial".

My machine happens to have a hardware modem, which is a serial-device as
far as 'ioreg' is concerned. Thus, I see an IOSerialBSDClient device when
I run the command on my machine.

Speaking of modems, there is a product called Stealth Serial Port that is a
daughter-card to replace the modem with a serial-port. I haven't used it
myself, but others I know have, and it works for them. YMMV. To find it,
google for "stealth serial port". This device will only work in Macs that
have a hardware modem. So I suggest finding the vendor and confirming your
Mac is supported before trying to purchase one.

And to answer an earlier question: the serial-port may or may not be in
/dev. It depends on the driver. In my experience, USB/serial-ports do
show up in /dev, but I haven't tried every USB/serial product, so YMMV.

If the device DOES show up in /dev, you should be able to 'cat' to it.
Again, this is my experience with my devices, and YMMV.
