Although the assumption seems to be create a .iso on Mac you can burn elsewhere.

About the only info on the format I turned up. Apparently Apple doesn't release the specs.

I assumed the .dsstore or whatever file would determine icons but the above does mention a resource fork and I just checked a mounted dmg and the only . file is .Trashes.

I also found an empty wikipedia entry I didn't hang onto the url for.

All very interesting but a full Apple unsupported implementation looks to be a lot of work for a fragile end product. I'd guess your best bet would be for a .dmg you should use your Mac.

I to some extent have tried to support the application bundle as a java cross-platform launcher. Unfortunately anything not JVM related, start up JVM arguments, classpath, etc is meaningless on any other platform. On the plus side being meaningless it should not be subject to cross-platform malfunctions. Which is why I distribute my AppEditVerify code as a .dmg. All the stuff it verifies and tries to fix, and there isn't that much really, is however, OS/X specific.
