Given the complexity of the task for non-Mac platforms, the simplest way to
achieve what you want may be to use a Mac. Share it on the network, then
SSH into it and invoke 'hdiutil' to produce the ".dmg" file, which you then
retrieve. It wouldn't need to be powerful or modern, so even a G3 iMac
would suffice. You could probably pick up used ones at your favorite
auction site for a song. Or even buy two, so if one dies you have a ready
spare.
