Yes indeed this was a solution. Thank you Matt.
It indeed sounds like Xcode is building with 1.5 and running with 1.4. You will need to open up the target settings for your Java application and set the Target VM Version to 1.4+ under "Pure Java Specific", as well as Source and Target VM versions of 1.4 (or earlier) under "Java Compiler Settings".
