Re: Issues with Extended Characters using Files and Runtime.exec (especially in 1.5)

All,
The latest developer preview works as expected.  The release notes reference a bug fixed in DP 6 titled: "( 4404074 ) Can't use Runtime.exec on accented path".  That is the likely bug that fixed the issues reported on the general release.  So, we have to just wait until the DP7 is released fully.

The other issue of requiring a File handle to be made using the canonically decomposed unicode string when pointing to an accented file on a remote AFP volume is still present however.  It may be too late to get that one in for this release, but we shall see...

Regards,
Michael

Greg,
Setting the "file.encoding" property to "UTF-8" does convert the exec parameters to UTF-8, so your hypothesis appears to be correct.  I am getting a system ready to put the developer preview on to verify its behavior.  We shall see what the results are....

Thanks,
Michael

After investigating what the open command receives as the parameter, it

I suspect that something may have changed which had been using UTF-8 and
started using the "file.encoding" property (i.e. the "default encoding"),
rather than an Apple engineer making an actual decision to intentionally
convert to MacRoman.

I also suggest trying the new 1.5 DP7, to see if the problem is still
present. If so, please send an urgent email to Apple that this is badly
broken and desperately needs fixing before final release. If the problem
is fixed, then all I can say is "Whew!".
