Print output quality problem

I'm generating an 8.5 x 11 sheet of barcode labels, then sending the output to a printer.

Output directly to the printer results in "fuzzy" low-quality barcodes, which are generally not readable by a scanner.

If I print using the OSX print dialog box, and "Save as PDF" to a file, I can open the PDF and view and print it from Preview, and from Adobe Acrobat. Both programs display the PDF the same on the screen. What is frustrating, is that Preview prints with the same "fuzzy" results as when I print directly from my Java program, but Acrobat prints beautiful crisp barcodes... just the way they were supposed to print.

My suspicion is that Acrobat is doing something with the print process that Preview isn't, and I need to get my program to send the same "sugar" to the system in order to print properly.

It is also possible that the default java printing resolution is far lower than I need, and Acrobat is internally increasing the resolution of the pdf berfore printing takes place. If this is the case, how can I set the print resolution to say, 300 or 600 DPI directly?

Maybe someone has tackled this problem before and has a quick answer. I searched the archives and found other printing issues, but nothing that I felt was related to this.

Thanks for your help.
