Wouldn't it be better if you didn't have to "steer folks towards the FileDialog" ?

Is there additional functionality you use with JFileChoosers that you notice missing with the FileDialog?

Yes.
All of it. (setAccessory, addChooseableFileFilter, setApproveButtonText, etc. )
Please fix it.
