I've just tried another app that someone send me with the same results. After restarting my Mac I'm still not getting the desktop icons. Assuming this works at all then it must be something with my Mac. I'll try updating to the latest Java 6 build. (I might be a couple behind)

It's typically not your application, but instead getting the Finder to know about the new icon. Refresh the window showing the folder, try switching to icon view (instead of browser view) or something similar.
I've done some work on this in the past, but it looks like I need to revisit it.
