Re: tcpflow not working?

You are right. tcpdump does not have the problem. That is a tools shipped in /usr/sbin, so it comes with osx.
My guess is that apples has changed the interface recently, which has broken these other tools.

I like tcpflow, because it shows you the cleaned up contents directly in the shell, and it is very easy to use (when it works of course) wireshark, which used to be called ethereal, has a nice User Interface to help one look at the packet contents.

I should report this to the wireshark group I suppose...

What's wrong with the regular tcpdump? I've used it a few times with the wireless and didn't cause any problem.

I was able to get a dump using tshark with the following command

sudo tshark -i lo0 -w - -R "tcp.port == 8080" > out

This took down en1 again, but I could restart it right afterwards whilst listening to the traffic on localhost.

To get an idea of why I needed this, see

I should have mentioned that I am using an Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Book Pro with OSX 10.4.9

Hi, I would like to work out what is going on the wire between a tomcat application and my browser. Usually I just use a command line tool such as tcpflow, which I downloaded using darwinports or fink. It has been some time I have not used it (at least a couple of months). It no longer works though. Has there been some kernel update that has changed the interface to such tools?

I don't get any output using

sudo tcpflow -i lo0 -c

When I run

sudo tcpflow -i en1 -c

my wireless network is shut down. I have to run

 sudo ifconfig en1 down
 sudo ifconfig en1 up

to get it to work again.

Does anyone have a similar experience? Or is it just me? Or is one meant to use some other tool now?

Henry
