It isn't magic. The Swing text components aren't converting the
chars to
bytes. They render the actual 16-bit Java chars.
I have a better idea of how it works in the situations commonly of
interest to me. So I found out what I want to know as far as
curiosity goes. I'm not sure it was entirely clear in what exact
situation it was not working for the OP which might mean there would
be more to cover or a better idea of what actually might be done for
it to work in a consistent way for him.
For me there isn't.
