Apologies - and thanks for pointing me to the bugreporter link, which I had previously been unable to find.

Now reported as Bug ID# 5155617

In the meantime, I hope that my report here that isHeadless doesn't do what it says it does, and that strange things happen when you run Java programs in a headless environment without specifying -Djava.awt.headless=true will be useful to other developers.
