Off-list, someone suggested I check to find out how and when the
various widgets are being redrawn. After checking, I discovered his
hunch was correct: the widgets do not seem to be drawn in the correct
order, but even when I tried some trickery to reorder the drawing
(basically by redrawing the AWT classes whenever their swing parents
are redrawn) I still got no love. :(
I should also note that contrary to my original subject, I've seen
the AWT elements fail to show up after a simple pack()/show() combo.
