I agree that Apple needs to wake up here. I am furious.
It is instructive to compare the activities on this list with those on
the X11 list. As you may or may not know, Apple switched from XFree86 to
X11.org in Leopard. X11 in Leopard was totally broken, even xterm did
not work.
The Apple person (Ben Byers) who is in charge of the X11 library is an
active participant on the list. As are two layers of his management. Not
only did Ben accept problems from the list, he also posted nightly
builds on http://www.x.org/wiki/XDarwin and later
http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz, and now there is a great
working X11 in just a few months.
Why can't Apple take the same action with Java?
Taking a year to fix Java security issues that could result in your
system being compromised is unconscionable. I personally sent security
reports to Apple about this, and got a "working on it" response with NO
time line for a fix. More than a few weeks is too long.
We have an example of Apple doing it properly, so the dead silence on
Java cannot be "Apple policy". There is a counter example.
How about a statement on this list from the Apple Java manager? It is
way past time.
