Thanks for the prompt response, Mike. You are probably right about the Java Update being the cause -- I just realized I hadn't rebooted since installing it a few days ago, and only did so after installing the most recent Security Update today. Unfortunately, adding "-Dfile.encoding=UTF-8" to my java launch line (and verifying it was there with a System.getProperty("file.encoding")) call didn't fix the problem...
