Re: Java Dev Recommendation

Hi, Marc,

I've been using WebObjects (WO) for over eight years to develop server-side (database-centric) web-based Java apps. If that's what you're looking for, that's what WO does. Apple also uses it for nearly all of their web sites including the iTunes Music Store and the online Apple Store.

Nearly all of Apple's WO development tools have been deprecated because they depended on the Java-bridge (to Objective C) which was also deprecated. As of Apple's release of Leopard, the tools are no longer distributed with the WO frameworks. Most Apple internal WO developers have been using Eclipse/WOLips rather than Xcode for WO development for over a year now.

There is a very active WO community that you can tap into through Apple's WebObjects-Dev List <email@hidden>. This community has replaced the primary WO development tools (Xcode, EOModeler and WOBuilder) and is in the process of refining them as open-sourced alternatives. The WO frameworks, however, are not open- source and will probably remain Apple proprietary for the foreseeable future.

Although WO development is in a state of flux this year because of the deprecations, most of us in the community are quite optimistic because the replacement tools are good (though not in as coherent a package as was distributed by Apple with their tools), and they're rapidly getting better as the community contributes to them. Out optimism is also based on the fact that Apple has improved the WO frameworks more over the last year than they have over the previous five years.

Regards,
Jerry

I'm new to development on the Mac. I'm looking for recommendation for developing server-side (database-centric) Java apps on the Mac. I took a look at WebObjects and I was wondering whether anybody has used it for that purpose (I see that some WebObjects tools are being deprecated). I would like to be able to deploy my apps to any app server on any OS platform without having to change these apps too much for each specific runtime environment (I would, however, consider optimization for runtime on a Mac server, if necessary).
Any advice? (I'm willing to learn new tools if I have to).
Thanks.
