Re: Java Dev Recommendation

For databases, don't forget Apache Derby (previously Cloudsape):

http://db.apache.org/derby/

Free and comes with an embedded mode that can be much simpler to manage inside an application.

We've been using Derby with the Hibernate Object Relational Mapping library. Great stuff.

While I'm at it I might as well put in a plug for JetBrains IDEA. It might not be free but the cost is quite reasonable and IMO it handily beats Eclipse for usability and NetBeans for features.

Databases can be MySQL ( http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/5.0.html ), Postgres ( http://developer.apple.com/internet/opensource/postgres.html ) or Oracle 10g ( http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/rohrer_macosx_10g.html <http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/rohrer_macosx_10g.html> ) running on OS X. Oracle may be a pain to install but digging on the net can get yo past problems.
