I think the problem is that the code moving the scrollBar is not invoked
from the Swing Event Dispatch Thread. I needed to wrap it in
SwingUtilities.invokeLater as described in
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=57&threadID=689486.

It is running now. We shall see.....
