That's not how *phones* typically work (and remember, Apple's not a
computer company any more). Phones typically only allow the user to
install applications that the phone company has allowed to be installed
on their network. Application vendors have to pay phone companies for
In essence, you cannot really own or buy an iPhone. You can only rent
it, and you can only do with it what Apple/Cingular wants you to do with
it. It is an appliance, not a computer.
Of course so far we don't have the final word, and I would love it if
this weren't true in the end; but I'm not optimistic.
