One thought: the iPhone is only going to be carried by Cingular. That
reveals the immense clout of the telcos in this market, since clearly
it would have been to the advantage of Apple to be able to sell its
phone to every mobile operator out there. The cost of the iPhone is
probably greater than the $499 advertised, which means that the
telcos have to recoup their money somehow. Of course if you know
telcos, they are not out to just cover their costs. They want to
maximise profits, by allowing as many add ons to be sold as possible
and taking a cut off each transaction. And Java applets I believe
represent a very large market of software add ons.
So from the above, my guess is that Cingular will be very keen on
getting Apple to include Java on the phone.
