I've successfully used the mpowerplayer system within the last 6 months - not dead at all! I guess it depends what you want to do with it though :)

Is there a Mac OS X development environment for J2ME?  I know about
the mpowerplayer system, but it was always incomplete, and the last
post by the moderator, Mike Powers, was in 2005.  It's basically dead.

You do know that Java is a dominant development platform for phones,
right?  J2ME ring any bells?

J2ME with JSR231 (JOGL) would allow truly gorgeous apps to run on
this device.
